CyclingWorks Bristol
North Bristol SusCom is backing a new campaign to encourage businesses to voice their support for improvements to cycling infrastructure across the Bristol travel-to-work area that will make it safer and easier for our employees to commute to work by bike. We are inviting all of our members to join us and express your support for it.
The campaign is called CyclingWorks Bristol and is based on a model used in London which mobilised over 200 businesses to simply write letters of support for this goal to enable the London Assembly & Boroughs to understand the importance of Safer Commuting by Bike for Business. The CyclingWorks Bristol campaign is focused on delivering a much better bike commuting experience by creating:
- a cross-city North-to-South & an East-to-West protected bike corridor, based on the new planned & existing routes.
- Cycle friendly facilities at each of our Park & Rides.
- Additional secure bike parking across the city centre
By expressing our support as a business and employer community to these goals, we can demonstrate to the West of England Combined Authority (and Bristol & S. Glos Unitary Authorities) that by prioritising specific parts of its recently adopted Local Cycling & Walking Infrastructure Plan (LCWIP), tangible improvements can be achieved. We have a once-in-a-generation-opportunity to accelerate a move towards active travel and also deliver air quality targets, net zero carbon targets and enable social distancing measures.
I know many of you have taken significant steps to become more cycle friendly at your sites. But, getting the right infrastructure on the road is also important because it gives staff the option to commute by bike easily, safely and with confidence. There’s lots of data that supports the case that more active travel by staff delivers other tangible business benefits; from staff wellbeing, productivity, parking costs and even recruitment, as well as the obvious wider environmental benefits of taking cars off the road.
Also with social distancing restrictions on public transport likely to be in place for some time, we need to do all we can now to stop more people jumping into their cars for their commute.
We are inviting members to learn more (presentation deck) and ask your CEO or equivalent to send a letter of support (template) to local & regional government leaders (and copying in the campaign at - [email protected]).
If you want to discuss this further please me know ([email protected]) or preferably contact Ian Pond who is leading the campaign, via email [email protected]. (The website for the campaign is being developed and we hope to formally launch the campaign once we have a core number of businesses signed up.) I hope you can join us so that we can highlight the benefits to business of safer and easier commuting by bike across our city region.
