Businesses need sustainable, integrated transport networks to thrive. Our employees need a variety of convenient, safe and stress-free ways to get to work.
North Bristol SusCom formed in 2012 in order to positively contribute to solutions to the transport issues in our area and help drive the changes we want to see for our businesses and employees. We are an independent, business-led network.

Strategic influence and collaboration

We work closely with key regional and national partners to drive investment in the West of England’s transport infrastructure, services and policies. We feed into strategic planning groups and major consultations to help decision makers understand the needs of business and commuters and to ultimately reduce congestion.

Our strategic activities include:
Member meetings
We meet every two months in person or online. Meetings cover the latest transport updates, presentations from partners and service providers and discussion of shared issues, opportunities and ideas.

Collaborative working with transport operators and regional partners
We work closely with the West of England Combined Authority, local Unitary Authorities and transport operators to help shape services that meet our businesses' needs.

Consultations
We submit collective responses to consultations on transport and service investments, representing the business voice with the regional and local authorities.

Representation and input
We input into regional and local planning groups such as Bristol's Transport Board, representing our businesses' needs at an early stage of decision making.

Area travel planning
We take a coordinated approach to travel planning with an Area Travel Plan covering the North Bristol Fringe and and key employer clusters.

Monthly briefings
We bring together the latest transport news and opportunities into a monthly member's email briefing.

Sharing experience and learnings
We share our past experiences, ideas and learnings across fellow members as well as with regional partners to design new services.

Workplace travel

We also lead by example, by managing our traffic impact within our own organisations and supporting our 40,000+ staff and 30,000 students to reduce the number of short car journeys they make. We take a coordinated approach, running collective campaigns and pilot schemes as well as sharing experience and best practice.

We encourage walking, cycling, bus and rail as preferred ways to travel to work and around the area on business, as well as home working. If journeys need to be undertaken by car we promote electric vehicles and car sharing.

Our workplace travel activities include:
Annual travel survey
Each year we help our members deliver the West of England Travel to Work Survey, supporting survey design, promotion and analysis of results.

Parking management
Parking is the key 'push factor' in achieving real change in travel choices and can be problematic for employers. We share experience and help member's implement appropriate car parking management policies.

Service launches and travel disruptions

We work with local partners to ensure members have timely information on upcoming disruptions and new services to limit disturbance and encourage modal shift.

Events and campaigns
We help members run effective events for staff, such as travel advice stalls, Dr Bike servicing and travel fairs. We help promote regular campaigns such as the annual Travelwest Commuter Challenge and Cycle to Work days.

Pilots and collaborations
Our members collaborate on pilot schemes for new travel services and products, and work together to look for shared solutions and opportunities.

Bespoke support

We are available for all of our members for one-to-one consultative support to address their particular issues and to develop Travel Action Plan's.

Guidance and best practice
We encourage best-practice and knowledge sharing across the network and develop group resources, templates and guides.
