Severn Bridge Toll Removal

On 17th December 2018, the UK Government removed the tolls on the Severn Bridges (the M4 Prince of Wales Bridge and the M48 Severn Bridge). This marks an important step in increasing economic connectivity between Wales and the West of England.

Yet, if we are truly going to maximise the economic opportunities, we need to tackle the predicted increase in traffic and congestion, both in South Wales and the Greater Bristol area, that toll removal will bring.

Mitigation measures are being explored to reduce the impact of any additional traffic but there are no quick wins and funding has yet to be secured to deliver any significant improvements.

We expect the impact of the removal of the tolls on the motorway and local road network to be significant as more and more people choose to move to South Wales and commute to North Bristol by car.

North Bristol SusCom has produced a leaflet for our employers to help them promote alternatives to single car occupancy to their employees and help minimise the increase in traffic.
